FAQs
Is vaping better for you than smoking?
Vaping is usually considered less harmful than smoking tobacco, but it is not risk-free.
Most vapes contain nicotine, which is an addictive substance.
Long-term health effects are still being studied.
Illegal or unregulated vape products carry higher risks, so only purchase your products from an established company.
Who is vaping suitable for?
Vaping is generally intended as a harm-reduction alternative for adult smokers (18+)
Public health guidance in the UK says it may help some adults to quit smoking, but it is not recommended for people who have never smoked or used any nicotine-based products.
Who is vaping NOT suitable for?
Children and teenagers
Non-smokers
Pregnant people, unless advised by a healthcare professional as part of smoking cessation
People with certain heart or lung conditions, unless medically advised
Anyone sensitive to nicotine
What are the different types of vaping?
There are two main vaping styles you may hear about. Understanding which one suits you can help you choose the right device and set it up accordingly.
Mouth-To-Lung Vaping (MTL)
MTL vaping is popular among beginners because it closely mimics the sensation of smoking a cigarette. It uses a tighter airflow, allowing you to draw vapour into your mouth first before inhaling it into your lungs.
Direct-To-lung Vaping (DTL)
DTL vaping is more common among experienced vapers. This style uses increased airflow and higher power, allowing vapour to be inhaled directly into your lungs for bigger clouds and stronger flavour.
What is E-liquid?
E-liquid, also known as vape juice, is the liquid used in vaping devices. When heated by the coil, it produces vapour for inhalation. Most e-liquids contain four key ingredients:
Propylene glycol (PG), which is commonly used to carry flavour in food products, food colouring and some medicines. In vaping, PG is responsible for creating the “throat hit” sensation.
Vegetable glycerine (VG), which is a sweet plant-based liquid that produces vapour similar to smoke and is thicker than PG. VG is also regarded as non-toxic and safe for use. Eliquids with a higher VG ratio provide a smoother vaping experience and create larger clouds.
E-liquid also contains flavouring and nicotine, although nicotine-free options are also available.
The most commonly used e-liquid for MTL devices is a 50/50 mix.
The most commonly used e-liquid for DTL devices is a 70/30 mix.
Finding the right E-liquid is largely down to personal preference, so trying different brands and flavours can help you discover the best option for you.
E-liquids are available in a wide range of flavours, including fruity, dessert based flavours, tobacco and menthol. You can also choose the strength of the nicotine in the juice or opt for a nicotine-free option.
How do I prime my coil before use?
It is important that you prime your coil before use. If you don't, you will experience a burning taste, as all you will be inhaling is dry cotton. You only have to do this when you get a new coil, not every time you fill the pod/tank.
The easiest way to prime a coil is to fill the pod/tank up with e-liquid, then leave it to soak through for around 15-20 minutes.
Make sure when you take the first inhale that it is full of flavour and there is no burning taste present.
OR
You can also put a few drops of e-liquid into the centre of the coil (the metal part) , watch the cotton in the windows of the coil become damp, then flick out any excess e-liquid, fill it up, and you’re good to go straight away.
PLEASE NOTE E-LIQUID STAINS SO BE MINDFUL WHERE YOU FLICK THE EXCESS!
What are the benefits of vapes compared to regular cigarettes?
Traditional cigarette smoke contains thousands of chemicals, including tar, carbon monoxide, formaldehyde and other harmful substances- Definitely not the dream team for your lungs.
Vapes work differently because they do not burn tobacco, meaning there is no ash, smoke, carcinogens or that unmistakable “just been out for a cigarette” smell.
How do I know which strength nicotine to go for?
15+ regular cigarettes per day = 18mg/20mg
10 cigarettes a day = 12mg/10mg
10 light cigarettes a day = 6mg/5mg
Very light/ occasional smokers= 3mg/0mg
What is the difference between free base and salt E-liquids?
Free base E-liquids are the classic style of vape juice and are popular amongst users who enjoy a stronger throat hit.
Nic salt E-liquids deliver a smoother inhale, higher strength and faster nicotine satisfaction.
There is no right or wrong choice, just personal preference.
Why am I coughing more with a vape than I ever did with cigarettes?
Coughing when switching to a vape is actually pretty common, especially if you’ve recently moved away from cigarettes.
A few things to keep in mind:
Your throat is adjusting- Cigarette smoke dulls the tiny hairs and nerves in your airways over time. When you switch to vaping, your throat and lungs can become sensitive again, which in turn may trigger a tickly cough for a while.
Nicotine strength may be too high- Using nicotine strengths stronger than you need can create a harsh throat hit and make you cough, especially with free base e-liquids.
Your inhale style may need changing- Smoking and vaping are slightly different. Taking sharp or deep inhales like a cigarette can make the vapour hit your throat too hard. Slower and gentler puffs often help.
Coil issues-An old or burnt coil can make the vapour harsh and unpleasant, leading to coughing.
Most people find the coughing settles down after a short adjustment period once they find the right device, airflow and e-liquid for their needs.
General Vape Safety Guidelines
Vapes are electrical items and therefore should be used correctly and safely
Using your vape correctly helps improve performance, flavour and overall safety.
Here are some simple tips to keep your device running smoothly.
Use the correct charger
Always use the charge recommended for your device where possible. Cheap or incompatible chargers can damage your battery and reduce your devices lifespan.
Don’t overcharge your device
Avoid leaving your vape charging overnight or unattended for long periods. Once fully charged, unplug it to help protect battery health.
Store E-liquids safely
Keep e-liquids away from children and pets. Store them in a cool dry place away from direct sunlight.
Replace coils regularly
If your vape tastes burnt, lacks flavour or is harsh, it’s time to replace your coil.
I always recommend changing your coil weekly or as soon as there is a muted flavour.
Regular coil changes help maintain flavour and help to avoid leaking.
Avoid extreme temperatures
Do not leave your vape or batteries in direct sunlight, hot cars or freezing conditions. Extreme temperatures can damage the battery.
Carry batteries safely
If you use removable batteries, NEVER carry loose batteries in your pocket or bag. If they make a connection with coins/keys there is a chance they will explode. Always carry loose batteries in an appropriate battery case.
Keep the device clean
Regularly wipe down your device and tank, especially if your job involves a lot of dust, mud etc.
This will help maintain life span and performance.
Use the right E-liquid
Make sure your e-liquid matches your device style. High VG liquids are better for sub-ohm or DTL devices, whilst nic salts are more suited to lower powered devices/pod kits.
Listen to your device
If your vape becomes unusually hot, leaks excessively or behaves in a way that is unexpected, stop using it until the issue has been checked or resolved.
